We had a little jaunt over the Labor Day weekend. My husband’s family goes away somewhere once a year. This year, we went over the Labor Day weekend and we went to Gaylord, Michigan. We rent a large home that can hold us all, do some sight-seeing, rest & eat ourselves silly. What more could you ask for?!
I want to take you on a little tour of the beautiful home that was ours for that brief amount of time .
Here it is….that is one of my sister-in-laws that I caught unawares. It sat in a wooded area on a beautiful lot. Would you like to go in and look around?
Here is the Kitchen. It was stocked with every tool and appliance we could ask for. It even had the necessities of coffee, tea, sugar, flour, spices, etc.
We have been doing this for many years now and I think that this was only place that was stocked with so many things. There were enough chairs to accommodate the whole crew of fifteen of us at mealtimes. Off the kitchen was a back porch that ran the length of the house with seats out there for all of us as well.
Here is the main floor living area adjacent to the dining area.
And this guy welcomed you when you came in the front door. Isn’t he great!
These two bedrooms and two bathrooms made up the main floor of this beautiful log home.
Now lets go upstairs……….
The landing area at the top of the stairs had this quaint reading area. I managed to sneak away for a little bit up here. And off to either side was a gable and each one held a twin bed …
There was another bedroom and bathroom up here and a door to the bonus room over the garage that held four beds, a sofa, and a table and chairs. The largest family stayed in there.
There was a family room in the basement where we gathered to watch a movie along with two more bedrooms and another bathroom! We really were spoiled with all of this!
We had planned on going on up to Mackinac Island for the day on Saturday but the weather didn’t co-operate. Either the sun was shining or it was pouring. We did manage to go uptown to the Farmers Market Saturday morning and browse through the shops. We mainly bought food………this is always the big ticket item! There was a chocolate shop that was voted as having the BEST Caramel Corn ever by most everyone in the group. The chocolate covered potato chips were another big hit but what I brought home was this…..
It actually made it all the way home and we had it one evening before supper as our appetizer. What if we would have waited until after supper—we may have not been able to finish it all and that would have been awful. Always eat dessert first, that is my motto…or maybe it is JUST eat dessert…..hmmmm.
On Sunday morning we got up headed out early to board the ferry to the island. Labor Day weekend is the busiest weekend of the year there but that is when we were there so that is when we went. And this is how busy and packed it was:
This is how it was everywhere you tried to walk. It was island to island people, folks! And all the people came over ferry by ferry by ferry. It is amazing that the island didn’t just give up and sink! I bet the people that actually live on the island, leave on holiday weekends. In our attempt to escape some of the hustle and bustle we rented bikes which consisted of standing in line FOREVER because everyone else had the same idea. But it was worth it in the end. We took the 8 mile ride around the perimeter of the island. The bike path was just as crowded but it was beautiful.
The island Post Office is just about the cutest thing. Can you imagine walking or riding your bike here to get the mail every day!
Of course all the cottages and homes are adorable and the flowers were beautiful.
This is just one of so many beautiful ones that we walked or rode by.
And this B&B had one of those cute wrought iron bikes planted with flowers.
While a lot of you were sweltering with the heat and humidity, we wore jackets all day as it was quite cool and breezy there.
Mike and I have decided that next time we visit it will definitely be during the week so that we can quietly take our time and explore every inch. So for now, we will bundle up, board the ferry, and enjoy the view of the harbor as we head on over to the mainland.
Time to go back to that beautiful Big House in the Little Woods for one more night of rest. And then we will head back to reality and work.
I am sure Frank and Vanessa will be glad to be home. They stayed with their best dog friends, Herbert and Phyllis so they were in good company but
There is no place like home!
